During the regency, in 1898, Spain lost its colonial rule over Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the United States as a result of the Spanish–American War.
His mother, Maria Christina of Austria, served as his regent until his 16th birthday. (1) His only son, Alfonso XIII, was born six months later on 17th May, 1886. He had been suffering from tuberculosis, but the immediate cause of his death was a recurrence of dysentery. Alfonso XII of Spain died three days before his 28th birthday, on 25th November 1885.
